The EFT Process

So you've heard of EFT and would like to try it for yourself.... here follows a description of the EFT short cut.

To make this easy, let's use an example. I had a very hard day at work and I felt really angry about the behaviour of a colleague, Betty.

Focus on the Challenge

One of the most important points to keep in mind when using EFT, is to find, focus on and 'tune in' to the problem. It's of little or no use to do the tapping while thinking of your shopping list. The disruption in your energy system can only be corrected if you're tuned in to it. So in my example, I'm going to focus on my anger with Betty.

Rate the Challenge

Also, it's very useful to have a scale of some sort to rate how much the challenge bothers you. Remember that this is a subjective measure. This means that your 8 is not the same as someone else's 8, and also - today's 8 might feel a bit different to yesterday's 8. It's all ok  - this measure helps you to know whether you're going in the right direction for this round. You could use one of the following:

  • A scale of 0 - 10, where 0 is "It doesn't bother me at all" and 10 is "It's the worst it can possibly be".
  • Small, medium, large
  • A little bit, medium, a lot
  • With children, it's useful to let them show you with their arms spread how much it bothers them

For our example, I rate my anger and right now it feels like an 8 out of 10.

The Tapping Points

The order of the points are easy to remember, because each point on the face and body, is below the previous point. The 'Top of Head' point was added later in the evolution of EFT, so we normally start on the Eyebrow point, go down the body, and then end on the 'Top of Head'. If you want to start on the 'Top of Head' and end Under Arm, it's perfect, too. You can't do this 'wrong' - it's a very forgiving process.

The order we prefer:

  1. Eyebrow
  2. Side of Eye
  3. Under Eye
  4. Under Nose
  5. Chin (in the hollow)
  6. Collarbone (not really ON the collarbone - it's actually between the collarbone and first rib, about 1.5 cm down from the end of the collarbone close to the sternum)
  7. Under Arm (about 4 fingers under the armpit, on the seam of the body - for ladies where the brastrap is, for men in line with the nipple)
  8. Top of Head

What to Say and Do

The EFT process consists of the Setup and then the 'EFT recipe'.

Setup (Do this 3 times):

The setup is when you make 'friends with your problem', so to speak. You'll make a short sentence of the problem, and add a positive affirmation to it. The basic construction is: "Even though ____________ (problem statement), I deeply and completely love and accept myself". Tap with one hand's fingers against the other hand's karate chop point (where Jackie Chan would chop through a piece of wood) while you say: "Even though I'm so angry with Betty, I deeply and completely love and accept myself".

The EFT Recipe

With the fingertips of your index and middle fingers, tap on each of the points in the order given above more or less 7 times on each point, while you repeat a reminder phrase. This is a short phrase which will remind you of, and help you to stay tuned in, to your issue. For our example, you could use "This anger" or "This anger with Betty"

Here, Again, are the Steps

  1. Focus on your problem
  2. Rate how much it is bothering you right now, using one of the methods above
  3. Do a round of tapping
  4. Rate how much the issues is bothering you now
  5. Repeat the steps as necessary until you feel complete relief (0 out of 10)
