EFT for Gripping Habits and Obsessions

What do you obsess about?

ChocolateWe’re all familiar with that feeling…. “I just can’t get that person out of my head”, or “I can’t stop thinking about food”.  Or “I’m trying to give up smoking (coffee/chocolate…), but all I can think of is having a cigarette/bar of chocolate….”

It drives you mad. You really try HARD to forget it, and focus on your tasks … and before you know it, your mind is back THERE. Obsessing about that thing, person, situation.

The dictionary defines “obsession” as - the domination of one's thoughts or feelings by a persistent idea, image, desire, etc. The key here is “domination”. If we think about someone or something once in a while, it’s not a problem. When it starts to dominate our thoughts and inner world to the exclusion of other thoughts, it can become severely disruptive, limiting and problematic. There’s NO FREEDOM or CHOICE!

It’s also possible to delude ourselves into thinking “it’s just a bad habit”. I sadly admit to this with my constant email-checking.

Yes – a habit can indeed be formed around certain activities. Let’s say I have a habit of putting my left shoe on first, and then my right shoe. For some reason, I decide to change the habit. Tonight, I can leave a note by my shoes to remind me to put the right shoe on first. If I do this enough times, I will have formed a new habit. Easy. Nothing to it.

Is it as easy to change the “habit” of smoking a cigarette, needing a cup of coffee or tea, thinking about THAT person, food, or constantly checking emails or Facebook? I will stick my neck out here and say I don’t think so! There’s something else at play here. And it generally feels stronger than us and our resolve to change. When these “habits” dominate our life and we get annoyed with it, but can’t stop, challenges arise and it robs us of our peace.
